About PresentChecker

PresentChecker started with a small, familiar problem: forgetting what you've already given someone โ€” and panicking every time a birthday or Christmas rolls around. It grew into a free gift tracker and AI gift advisor built around one simple idea: thoughtful giving is mostly a memory problem, and memory problems can be solved.

The problem we set out to solve

Most of us give gifts to the same handful of people year after year: parents, a partner, siblings, a few close friends. Over a decade that's a lot of birthdays, Christmases, anniversaries and "just because" moments โ€” and somewhere in there, almost everyone has accidentally given a near-duplicate of a previous present, or stood in a shop twenty minutes before closing with absolutely no idea what to choose.

The frustrating part is that it isn't for lack of caring. The thoughtful gift is rarely the expensive one; it's the one that shows you were paying attention โ€” the book by the author they mentioned, the upgrade to the thing they use every day, the experience that fits exactly who they are. The trouble is that paying that kind of attention across dozens of people and occasions, and remembering it months later, is genuinely hard to do from memory alone.

PresentChecker is our answer to that. It's a quiet, private place to keep track of the people in your life โ€” their interests, the occasions coming up, and what you've given them before โ€” so that you never repeat yourself and never start from a blank page again.

What we believe about good gift-giving

We built the product around a few convictions that shape every part of it. The first is that specificity beats spending. A modest gift tied to something the person genuinely loves will almost always land better than an expensive but generic one, because it proves you actually know them.

The second is that context matters as much as the object. The same person wants very different things for a milestone birthday, a low-key Christmas, or a first anniversary โ€” and a good suggestion has to account for the occasion, the relationship, and the budget, not just the recipient. The third is that giving should feel warm, not stressful. The whole point of the tool is to take the panic out of the process so the thought can come back in.

How PresentChecker works

For each person, you build a short profile: their age, their interests, your relationship to them, and a history of the gifts you've given over the years. It takes a minute to set up and quietly pays off every time an occasion comes around.

When you need an idea, the built-in AI advisor reads that profile and suggests options that actually fit โ€” matched to the occasion and your budget โ€” while deliberately avoiding anything you've given before. Instead of a generic "gifts for dad" list, you get suggestions shaped by the specific dad you're buying for. You're always in control: the ideas are a considered starting point, not a rule, and you can refine, ignore, or build on them however you like.

Alongside the advisor, our gift guides walk through how to think about giving for particular people and occasions โ€” the questions to ask, the budget ranges that make sense, and the common mistakes worth avoiding. They're written to be useful on their own, whether or not you ever build a profile.

Your privacy and your data

You can use the whole thing for free without an account, in which case your gift vault stays in your own browser and never touches our servers. If you'd like it to sync across your phone and computer, you can create a free account. Either way, we don't sell your data and we don't share it with advertisers โ€” you can read exactly how we handle everything in our privacy policy.

Who's behind it

PresentChecker is an independent project, built and maintained by a small team that simply got tired of last-minute gift panic and thought there had to be a better way. We're not a marketplace, we don't hold stock, and we don't take a cut of anything you choose to buy โ€” our only goal is to make gift-giving a little more thoughtful and a lot less stressful. The AI suggestions are powered by Claude, and everything you read on the site is written and checked by real people.

Frequently asked questions

Is PresentChecker free? Yes. The core tool โ€” building profiles, tracking gift history, and getting AI suggestions โ€” is free to use, and you can do it without creating an account at all.

Do I need an account? No. Without an account your data lives only in your browser. An account is optional and exists purely so your gift vault can sync across your devices.

Does PresentChecker sell the gifts? No. We're not a shop. We help you decide what to give; where you buy it is entirely up to you.

How are the suggestions generated? They're generated by an AI advisor that reads the profile you've built and matches ideas to the person, the occasion, and your budget, while skipping anything you've already given.
